Improving Health Finances FoR OLDER ADULTS

Complicated and confusing health finance experiences can contribute to or cause negative emotions, leading many patients to disengage from payment — or worse, from medical care itself. HHS and AARP sponsored the design challenge A Bill You Can Understand to help improve the medical billing experience for patients. Current medical billing and cost estimation processes are designed as transactional interactions between a customer and a vendor, without recognizing the emotional and financial challenges that compound healthcare decision-making. To engender trust and empower patients to prioritize care over cost, we need to move from a transactional to a supportive model.

I was Project Co-Lead on the UX/UI design, content, and conceptual development of a submission called Wellth. This visionary platform addresses patient concerns and feelings throughout the health finance journey. Our concept was refined through a human-centered design process and a series of iterations based on research learnings. This process included a participatory design studio with low-wealth older adult women.

The final submission includes a design brief, UI/UX visual compositions, and journey maps for existing and transformed patient experiences.
